Actress Bolatito Sowunmi, renowned for her comic role as Miss Pepeye in the Papa Ajasco sitcom, has expressed support for fellow actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, who played the Papa Ajasco character.
Her support follows the backlash Ayoyinka received over remarks made during a recent interview with a content creator, Udu. In the interview, he explained that he does not have the right to use the name Papa Ajasco, as it has been trademarked by Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP).
He also claimed that he lacks the financial means to acquire a vehicle, citing restrictions that prevent him from using the character in acting roles or advertisements to earn income.
However, Wale Adenuga refuted the claims, stating that Ayoyinka was well compensated for his role and was also a civil servant who received due remuneration during his service and continues to earn a pension. The response sparked public outrage, with many questioning Ayoyinka’s claims.
In a show of solidarity, Sowunmi shared a lengthy post on her Instagram page, urging the public to refrain from criticising the actor for speaking out. She noted that she is younger and more agile than Ayoyinka, who is now elderly, and therefore able to explore more opportunities, warning against unfair comparisons between them.
She added that she would never speak against Wale Adenuga Productions but appealed to the public to support Ayoyinka if they are able to, rather than blame him for his situation, citing the country’s economic challenges.
Miss Pepeye also mentioned fellow actor Pa James, whom she said is in need of assistance, noting that she is aware of some of his personal struggles, as well as those of Ayoyinka.
Corroborating Ayoyinka’s claims, Sowunmi revealed that she has adopted a new nickname, “Ms Eagle,” as “Miss Pepeye” is copyrighted by WAP. She noted that this further explains Ayoyinka’s recent decision to adopt “Bondu Alaska” as his stage name.
