The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended the medical director of Euracare and two other doctors following the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of author Chimamanda Adichie.

Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twins, died on January 7, 2026, after complications arising from preparatory medical procedures. The writer subsequently issued a legal notice to the hospital, alleging that medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to her son’s death.

An investigation panel was set up by the MDCN to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. After reviewing the case, the panel said a prima facie case of medical negligence was established against Euracare and Atlantis Hospital in the management of the child.

As a result, Tunde Majekodunmi, Euracare’s medical director; Titus Ogundare, the anaesthesiologist; and Atinuke Uwajeg, chief medical officer of Atlantis Hospital, were suspended from practising medicine in Nigeria pending the determination of their cases by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The panel’s secretary, Enejo Abdu, also disclosed that sufficient evidence of professional misconduct was found against 10 other doctors at Atlantis Hospital. Those listed include Adeseye Akinsete, Chidinma Ohagwu, Anthony Ajeh, Amarachi Bayo, Nkechi Peji, Olaoye Oludare, Agaja Oyinkansola, Patricia Akintan, Babatunde Bamgboye and Raji Faidat.

Eight other doctors were cleared after the panel reviewed complaints against 21 practitioners, alongside their written responses and sworn oral testimonies.

The council emphasised that its findings are preliminary and do not constitute a final verdict, noting that the affected doctors will face a full hearing before the tribunal where a final decision will be taken.

The investigation concluded during the panel’s 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, while a coroner’s inquest into the case is scheduled to commence on April 14.
