Residents of Ondo town were thrown into amazement on Wednesday after a 35-year-old man, who had reportedly lived with mental illness for about 15 years, suddenly regained consciousness during a church programme, triggering widespread attention and curiosity within the community.

The incident occurred along Ayeyemi Street, where a programme organised by a new-generation church was ongoing.

Eyewitnesses said the development took many residents by surprise, leading to a massive influx of people who trooped to the church to witness what was described as a miraculous recovery.

The man, popularly known in the area as “Da Green”, was well known around Odosida and Odojomu Streets, where he usually roamed, often wearing tattered clothes and piling refuse at a particular spot. On the day of the incident, he reportedly left his usual location and wandered to Ayeyemi Street in search of food.

It was gathered that a clergyman invited to minister at the church programme sighted the man standing along the street and instructed church workers to bring him to the venue, claiming he had received divine instruction to pray for him.

Moments after the man was brought into the church, the cleric prayed for him. Witnesses said the man reportedly collapsed and lay motionless for several minutes, during which he rolled on the floor, before eventually regaining consciousness.

Upon recovery, the man reportedly collected a microphone and identified himself as Wale, breaking down in uncontrollable tears. Church workers later led him into a room within the premises, where his long, matted hair was cut. He was also given water to bathe and provided with clean clothes to replace the rags he had been wearing.

The development attracted a large crowd, including many commercial motorcycle riders, who flooded the church premises, struggling to catch a glimpse of the man as he raised his hands in praise.

Speaking shortly after regaining consciousness, Wale, visibly emotional, said he was unable to immediately identify his family home. He described his recovery as miraculous and expressed gratitude to God for restoring his sanity.

Although he could not recall exactly when his condition began, he said he was thankful for the opportunity to start life afresh and pledged to dedicate the rest of his life to serving and praising God.

The clergyman, who described the incident as an act of God, said he had received a divine revelation to pray for the man while preparing for the week-long programme days earlier.

As of the time of filing this report, Wale remained in the care of the church, awaiting the arrival of his relatives.

He was later taken into one of the inner rooms of the church as workers struggled to control the large crowd that continued to gather to see him.
