A cattle farmer in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Mohammed Abubakar, has alleged that some people allegedly from the state government agencies attacked his farm in the wee hours of last Thursday, causing damage and carting away six of his herd at his Ilaju cattle farm along Eruwa road in Ido Local Government area of the state.

Abubakar, who spoke with journalists in Ibadan on Monday, narrated that the reported officials caused disruption in his home during the eating of sahur of the Muslims Ramadan fasting, at about 4:00 a.m.

He said the matter was reported to the police at the Ido Police Station.

“That Thursday midnight, after we have left our farm, it was during sahur that they came in a convoy to raid our cattle farm, around 4:00 a.m.

“They killed one of my cows and took six away. We went to the Ido Police Station to lodge report. Our place is at Ilaju along Eruwa road.

“As we were coming with the police to the cattle farm, we met them (the officials) on the road. The leader of the team identified himself as retired Deputu Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ojomo, and a security aide to the governor, from Rule of Law Enforcement Authority.

“He said we should come to the secretariat. They have been doing this against us for long.

“For instance, if they took away your cow that is worth N10 million, they could ask you to pay N20 million to reclaim it. We did not graze on anybody’s farm.

“And they came in the dead of the night. We can’t go to their office because they could detain us. We have called the number they wrote on the paper given to us, it is not responding,” he said.

The state police command, through the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olushola Olayinka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the incident happened.

Ayanlade explained that the operation was official, as the Oyo State government accused the cattle herder of open grazing, adding that the state Law Enforcement Authority carried out the raid in conjunction with the state Ministry of Environment.

He, however, did not talk about the said time of the raid, but advised Mr. Abubakar not to be afraid of visiting the ministry to get the matter sorted out.

As of the time of filing this report, the number of the supposed secretary of the agency, allegedly given to Abubakar, was not responding.

Efforts to reach the government agencies were not fruitful as of press time.

However, a source told our reporter that lawyers of the cattle rearer had been talking with government agencies on his behalf.
