Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside civil society organisations and media professionals, on Friday staged a protest at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, calling for urgent intervention by the National Assembly in the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.

The protesters urged federal lawmakers to invoke Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to take over the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, alleging that the Assembly has suffered a “total loss of credibility and legitimacy.”

At the rally, the coalition strongly condemned the impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing them as a reckless abuse of legislative power capable of undermining democratic governance in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the APC Leaders Forum, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka said the Rivers Assembly had forfeited its moral authority due to what he termed persistent misuse of legislative powers.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly has lost all credibility due to continuous abuse of power and a desperate impeachment plot,” he said.

“This is no longer legislative oversight; it is a vendetta aimed at destabilising governance. Silence at this point amounts to complicity.”
The protesters also commended the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, for declining to constitute an impeachment probe panel, describing the decision as “a courageous stand in defence of the rule of law.”

Coordinator of the civil society coalition, Comrade Blessing Ibama, insisted that the allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara were baseless.
“There is no shred of evidence to support claims of gross misconduct. What we are witnessing is pure political fiction,” Ibama said.

“The Assembly’s disregard for due process and alleged defiance of court orders render it unfit to continue performing legislative functions.”

The coalition further accused 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, of aggravating the crisis. They alleged that the lawmakers received huge sums running into millions of naira for constituency projects, luxury SUVs, and one year’s salary paid in advance.

The protesters vowed to sustain pressure until the National Assembly acts decisively.
“We call on Nigerians to mobilise peacefully at the National Assembly to stop this legislative anarchy,” Ibama urged.

The coalition reaffirmed its support for Governor Fubara, describing him as committed to the welfare of Rivers people, and pledged to work collectively to restore constitutional order in the state.

The protest was attended by representatives of various civil society organisations led by Comrade Ifeanyi Okorie (Convener) and Dr. Maryann Douglas (Director of Programmes), as well as media professionals and APC leaders, including Mr. Collins Akpofure, Engr. Ibrahim Danjuma (National Leader, APC Leaders Forum), and Elder Akpan Ekpeyong (National Secretary).
