Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has hinted at continuity in governance beyond the end of his tenure in May 2027 through competent team, assuring residents that members of his administration are well-positioned to sustain the developmental strides recorded under his leadership.

The governor made this known on Sunday during a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, held as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State.

Makinde emphasized that his administration has laid a solid foundation for the state’s future, expressing confidence that effective governance would continue even after he leaves office.

Earlier in the service, the governor read the second Bible lesson from Matthew 5:1–12 and congratulated the people of Oyo State for witnessing the golden jubilee celebration, which he attributed to divine grace.

Reflecting on his political journey, Makinde noted that his emergence as governor in 2019, after eight years of contesting, was a product of God’s mercy, describing his administration as a new dawn for the state.

Delivering a goodwill message, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, commended Makinde’s leadership approach and transformative policies in Oyo State.

“As Oyo State celebrates its 50th anniversary, I pray that the next fifty years will be exemplary,” Obi said.
“May God continue to bless the governor and members of his team.”

Obi also appealed to Nigerians to continually pray for political leaders, acknowledging governance challenges in the country.

“We politicians are the problem of Nigeria. Nigeria is not poor, but poorly governed. Please remember us in your prayers, that God will touch our hearts to use public funds for the public good,” he stated.

In his sermon titled “Gratitude,” the Archbishop of the Ibadan Province, Most Rev’d Williams Aladekugbe, praised God’s faithfulness to Oyo State over the past five decades.

He acknowledged the contributions of past leaders to the state’s growth and commended Governor Makinde for implementing people-focused policies that have driven infrastructure development, improved workers’ and pensioners’ welfare, and fostered peaceful coexistence.

The Archbishop concluded the service with special prayers for the governor, former leaders of the state, and the nation, while also praying for the sustenance of good governance in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
