The Federal Government has issued a travel advisory to Nigerians living in or travelling to Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following rising military tensions in the Middle East after the United States and Israel carried out missile strikes on Iran, with Tehran launching retaliatory attacks in parts of the Gulf region.

In a statement signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation, citing concerns over heightened tensions and the risk of further escalation.

The ministry urged Nigerians in the affected countries to remain highly vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times, warning them to avoid strategic, military and government locations that could become potential flashpoints.

Citizens were advised to limit non-essential travel and movement within the affected countries until the security situation improves, and to avoid large gatherings or public demonstrations.

The ministry emphasised strict compliance with security directives issued by local authorities, stressing that cooperation with law enforcement agencies is essential for personal safety.

Nigerians were also encouraged to rely on credible international and local news sources while being wary of misinformation, and to depend on official channels for verified safety updates.

According to the statement, the Nigerian embassy in Tehran and diplomatic missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert to provide consular support and maintain communication with citizens.

The government assured the public that the protection and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority, adding that it will continue to assess developments and urging all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and coexistence.
