The Oluyede Campaign Council has raised concerns over increase in banditry activities in Ekiti State, blaming the clueless and purposeless government of the All Progressives Congress-led administration of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for the insecurity challenges in the state.
The Council, speaking through its Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, described the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as aberration and Ekiti has been worst for the unfortunate administration foisted on the people through election results manipulation of 2022.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the council alleged that residents of communities bordering Kwara State and Kogi State are living in fear due to increasing attacks.
According to the statement, communities that had previously experienced harassment and attacks by armed herdsmen are now facing incidents of banditry involving killings and kidnappings for ransom.
The council cited incidents that reportedly occurred in February when armed bandits attacked Irele and Ijowa communities in Ajoni Local Council Development Area, where residents were allegedly subjected to days of violence.
The statement claimed that the attackers held the communities hostage for about 11 days, abducted five people and killed an elderly woman. It further alleged that the bandits demanded a ransom of ₦1.5 million from the family of the deceased before releasing the body for burial.
The Campaign Council accused government of wasting state funds on frivolities. Instead of the governor investing heavily in local security, he is alleged to be empowering only a few individuals within his government.
The Council criticised the state security outfit, Amotekun Corps, saying it had not been adequately equipped or funded to effectively tackle crime.
According to the Council, the security outfit lacks sufficient operational tools, while its personnel are poorly motivated.
The group further alleged that the state government had failed to prioritise security investments needed to safeguard residents.
Now that the coast is clear and could see clearly because the rain has gone, the Campaign Council said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through its candidate, Wole Oluyede, and with the backing of traumatised, dejected, and impoverished Ekiti people, is ready to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the June 20, 2026 governorship election.
The Campaign Council advised Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji and the APC to begin preparing their handover notes from now, insisting that nothing would prevent their defeat at the polls.
The Council also thanked the people of Ekiti State for standing by Dr Oluyede and the PDP throughout what it described as difficult periods, and for not succumbing to what it called the propaganda and tactics of the Oyebanji administration.
It further stated that while the candidature of Dr Oluyede has been affirmed by the Appeal Court, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was reportedly directed by the Federal High Court in Abuja to restore the PDP logo on the ballot and recognise Oluyede as the party’s candidate, the worries now lies with the APC, which has yet to present a valid governorship candidate.
The council thanked residents of Ekiti State for their continued support for Oluyede and the PDP, urging them to remain steadfast ahead of the governorship election.
