Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have apprehended the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping and killing of Professor Ekanem Philip Ephraim, a distinguished professor of neurology, almost two years after the incident.

According to Arise News, a reliable security source disclosed that the suspects were arrested on December 27 at a medical facility in Cross River State.

Those taken into custody include 23-year-old Patrick Essien Etim, identified as the gang’s leader, and his accomplice, Bassey Antiha Asuquo, 40.

At the time of their arrest, the pair were reportedly plotting the abduction of another prominent medical professional.

The source further revealed that the DSS had been closely monitoring the kidnapping syndicate since Professor Ephraim was abducted and killed in July 2023.

She was reportedly taken from her private clinic along Atimbo Road in Calabar by armed men who pretended to be patients seeking treatment.

Investigations indicate that the suspects confessed to the crime, admitting that they killed Professor Ephraim after collecting multiple ransom payments from her family.

The uncertainty surrounding her fate had subjected her family and colleagues to prolonged anguish.

“For nearly two years, her loved ones endured immense pain without knowing the truth about her disappearance,” the source said.

“These arrests may finally bring them some closure and peace.”

The suspects also reportedly admitted to participating in other kidnapping operations and acts of vandalism, including the destruction of electricity infrastructure.

Another suspect, identified as Isaac Ekpeyong, has also been arrested in connection with the crimes.

Professor Ephraim’s abduction in July 2023 triggered widespread outrage across Cross River State, prompting the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to embark on an indefinite strike to demand her release.

The action severely disrupted healthcare services in the state for more than a week.

According to source, described the arrests as a significant breakthrough, highlighting the DSS’s renewed focus on covert intelligence operations and its resolve to enhance public safety.

Investigations are ongoing as security agencies work to uncover the full scope of the gang’s activities and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
