Members of the Yoruba community in Kano have been advised to distance themselves from the planned chieftaincy ceremony scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026, following the intervention of some prominent first-class traditional rulers in Kano and Yorubaland.
The controversy centres on the decision of the Yoruba Community leader in Kano, Engr. Murtala Alimi Otisese, to confer chieftaincy titles on selected individuals in Kano State.
Credible sources revealed that some individuals, allegedly dissatisfied with the decision of the royal fathers to suspend the event pending the fulfilment of certain conditions, have reportedly approached a court in a bid to overturn the directive issued by the traditional rulers.
According to Prince Muji Armstrong-Bello, a critical stakeholder in the community, the monarchs who mediated and subsequently directed the suspension of the proposed ceremony include:
His Highness, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Sarkin Kano
His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Ekeji Orisa, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, the Alaafin of Oyo
His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife
His Imperial Majesty, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I, the Olubadan of Ibadanland
His Royal Majesty, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji Laaroye II, the Ataoja of Oshogboland, among others.
Prince Armstrong-Bello stated that the monarchs, in their collective wisdom, advised Engr. Otisese to fulfil certain conditions before proceeding with the ceremony.
Among the conditions listed were:
That Seyi Olorunisola, one of the intended recipients, should tender an unreserved apology to the Yoruba community and certain individuals for previously instituting legal action against them and for allegedly contributing to divisions within the once-united community.
That Engr. Otisese should take steps to:
Reunite the Yoruba Muslim community, which was reportedly divided.
Restore the previous arrangement allowing all members of the Yoruba community to perform Eid prayers together at Sabon Gari Stadium (Yidi).
Reconcile the factions of Osun and Kwara State executives of the community.
Mend relations with members of the Oba-in-Council who have withdrawn from palace activities.
Recognise Yoruba heads at the local government level as Obas rather than Baales.
Ensure that future community plans, programmes, and events involve critical stakeholders, including local government Obas, members of the Oba-in-Council, and the Yoruba Community executive.
Serve, alongside subordinate Obas at the local government level, as a screening committee for any proposed chieftaincy conferment.
However, Prince Armstrong-Bello alleged that Engr. Otisese has declined to comply with these directives, which, by implication, suggests that he considers himself an Oba in his own right and beyond the authority of those seeking to halt the scheduled event.
Armstrong-Bello further disclosed that relevant security agencies have been alerted to monitor the situation and prevent any gathering deemed unlawful in connection with the disputed ceremony.
