Please, share this story:
Popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, widely known as KWAM 1 and K1 De Ultimate, has formally joined the race to contest for the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
Ayinde made his intention known in a letter dated 3 December 2025 and addressed to the Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Agunsebi Quarters, Ijebu-Ode. He said his interest was guided strictly by Ijebu customary law and the Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws.
In the letter, KWAM 1 stated that he was born on 3 March 1957 and is a “bonafide son” of the ruling house, tracing his ancestry to the Oba Jadiara lineage—a connection he believes qualifies him to stand for consideration in accordance with tradition.
Ayinde, who holds the national honor of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), highlighted his decades-long contributions to Ijebuland, Yorubaland, and Nigeria. He noted that through music, public engagements, and cultural advocacy, he had consistently promoted Ijebu identity and values. He also recalled the chieftaincy titles bestowed on him in 2023 by the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
His declaration comes as the Fusengbuwa Ruling House commences the traditional process of selecting candidates to succeed Oba Adetona, whose death ended a reign of more than six decades.
In a separate communication, the Awujale Interregnum Administration Council, through the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Oke Abiodun Adebanjo, formally notified the ruling house that it is their turn to present eligible princes for the stool. The leaders—Otunba Abdul-Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi (Chairman), Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba (Deputy Chairman), and Prof. Fassy Adetokunbo Yusuf (Vice Chairman)—were given 14 days to submit nominated candidates to the Executive Chairman’s office.
The letter also emphasized that the process must strictly follow the established rotational pattern and chieftaincy laws guiding succession in Ijebuland.
An important stage of the rites is scheduled for Tuesday, 2 December 2025, when the Ogbeni Odi will formally carry the Awujale’s Staff of Office—an act that signals the beginning of the next phase of the transition.
The council further appealed for unity, transparency, and strict adherence to tradition, noting that the Awujale stool remains one of the country’s most respected traditional institutions.
With Otunba Wasiu Ayinde’s entry, public attention is expected to intensify, given his prominence and cultural influence. However, other qualified princes from the Fusengbuwa lineage are also expected to express interest before the nomination window closes.
