The bandits who kidnapped 38 worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, have made contact with the victims’ families, demanding a total ransom of N3.8 billion for their release.

This translates to N100 million for each of the 38 abductees.

The demand was confirmed by a community leader, Chief Olusegun Olukotun, the Olori Eta of Eruku, who himself narrowly escaped the Tuesday evening attack. “I was in the church with my five family members when the incident occurred,” he recounted. “I escaped through the church’s window alongside one of my wards.” Four of his relatives are among the captives.

Chief Olukotun explained that the kidnappers have organized the victims by family groups to facilitate their ransom demands. He issued a dual appeal for a greater security presence in the border community and for the fortification of local vigilantes with more sophisticated weapons to match the firepower of the assailants.

The attack has drawn condemnation from the highest levels of traditional leadership. The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council described the incident as “sad, dastardly, and unpatriotic,” and urged security agencies to intensify efforts for the victims’ safe return.
