The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission has assured the people of the South-West that by this time next year, the problem of food scarcity will have eased.
Director-General of the commission, Mr. Seye Oyeleye, gave the assurance during a discussion on the Newsmen, a programme of Petals FM, Ibadan on Wednesday.
Oyeleye, a lawyer, noted that the governors of the South-West states have put machineries in motion to make the region to be self-sufficient in food production.
Among other things, he said there was the need to harness maximum use of water resources in the region, adding that the governors had come to the realisation of this.
Recall that the governors of the South-West states recently met in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to brainstorm on the way out of rising cost of food items.
“The governors are united their resolve to end the crisis. A situation where the South-West would depend on other parts of the country for food sustainability is unacceptable
“Agreed, they have the land mass, but we also have fertile land that can feed our people.
“It is time for us to practice all-year-round farming. We have dam that have not been used to capacity. Look at the Ikere Gorge Dam; that can supply us irrigation that we can use to farm all year.
“Also, we need to cultivate the habit of visiting our local government Agric office or even the state secretariats; there are provisions for agricultural helps that our people are not tapping into.
“There are crops that individuals can cultivate on their compounds. For instance, I have a friend in Ibadan here who harvested 400 tubers of yam planted in bags in his compound
“But I can tell you, the governors of the South-West have their hands on the plough. By this time next year, or even before, there will be changes.
“I have been to the Fashola Farm Settlement of the Oyo State government; the government has provided the enabling environment for farmers to thrive.
“Across the South-West, by June next year, we shall see changes in prices of food,” he said.
