In response to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) forecast predicting heavy rainfall and potential flooding in Ekiti and twelve other states, the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, led by Commissioner Erelu Tosin Aluko Ajisafe, has announced proactive measures to safeguard lives of residents and public infrastructure in Ekiti State.

Aluko Ajisafe urged residents to take NiMET’s warnings seriously, noting that the State Government through the ministry has initiated efforts which include the ongoing and approved work plan to clear blocked drainages and waterways in Ado, there, and Ekiti South-West Local Government and also, the desolation of lined drains, culverts and access slabs in Ado, there and IREPODUN/IFELODUN, Local government, which are considered to be high-risk flood zones between June to October 2024.

The Commissioner explained that the ministry has equally launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on flood safety measures.

This campaign involves information dissemination through radio announcements, social media, and community engagement. Additionally, the ministry is working closely with relevant ministries/departments/agencies and local governments to identify flood-prone areas within their jurisdiction and to coordinate advocacy campaigns and mitigation measures.

Specifically, local government and LCDAS in Ado Ekiti considered to be high-risk flood zones are to get immediate desolation of their blocked drainages and river courses within their areas.

The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents by working together with relevant MDAs/LGAs/ and LCDAs so that members of the public can effectively mitigate the impact of potential flash flooding and ensure timely responses to any emergency
