President Paul Biya has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of Cameroon, in a move widely interpreted as a strategic consolidation of power within his family.
The appointment, contained in an official decree dated April 4, 2026, also names Franck Biya as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, effectively placing him at the heart of both the country’s political and military command structure.
According to the presidency, the decision was made in line with constitutional provisions and defence regulations, citing “service requirements” as the basis for the move. The directive is expected to be formally recorded and published in the national gazette.
The development comes just months after Biya, 92, was sworn in for a controversial eighth term in office following a disputed presidential election that triggered protests and attracted international scrutiny.
Official results showed that Biya secured 54 percent of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who garnered 35 percent. However, Bakary rejected the outcome, alleging widespread electoral fraud—claims firmly denied by the government.
Despite the backlash, President Biya defended the credibility of the election and commended security forces for maintaining order during the unrest. The country’s Constitutional Council subsequently dismissed opposition petitions, citing insufficient evidence.
Having ruled Cameroon since 1982 after succeeding Ahmadou Ahidjo, Biya has long faced criticism from opposition figures who accuse him of entrenching power through tightly controlled political and military systems.
The elevation of his son to such a powerful position is expected to heighten concerns over succession planning, democratic governance, and the growing perception of dynastic rule in Cameroon’s political landscape.
