In what could signal a major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics, Seyi Makinde is reportedly considering a move away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the emerging Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), amid the deepening crisis within the party.

Sources revealed that the possibility of Makinde’s defection is gaining momentum, particularly as internal divisions continue to weaken the PDP at both national and state levels.

A key figure driving this potential shift is Seriake Dickson, who is said to be actively lobbying Makinde to join the NDC. Dickson is reportedly positioning the platform as a credible and stabilising alternative for disenchanted PDP stakeholders.

Insiders say the proposed move is resonating with some party leaders and governors who are increasingly frustrated by the PDP’s prolonged leadership tussles and unresolved internal conflicts. The situation has been further complicated by developments surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where legal disputes have hindered its role in a broader opposition coalition.

Adding to the uncertainty, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently declined recognition of a faction of the ADC leadership due to ongoing court cases, further shaking opposition alignment efforts.

Within Oyo State, tensions inside the PDP have also intensified, particularly over succession plans ahead of the next governorship election. Several aspirants have already undergone screening, including prominent political figures and technocrats, but internal divisions persist.

Although Governor Makinde has publicly maintained that competence and loyalty will determine his preferred successor, sources suggest he is inclined toward candidates who align with his technocratic and reform-driven governance style.

At the national level, the PDP crisis has been worsened by the ongoing rift between Makinde and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The struggle for control of party structures has created multiple factions, weakening the PDP’s standing as a leading opposition force.

Amid these developments, Makinde is expected to hold a crucial meeting with key PDP stakeholders in Oyo State on April 8. The meeting is widely regarded as decisive, with insiders describing it as a “make-or-break” consultation that could determine his political future.

“This is not a decision he will take lightly,” a source said. “The outcome of the meeting will shape not just his next move, but the broader political direction of Oyo State and possibly the national opposition.”

Observers note that if Makinde eventually defects, the ripple effects could be significant, with many loyalists and political actors likely to follow—potentially reshaping the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
