Amid a series of troubling developments within the last 48 hours, concerned members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the country have raised questions about the future of the party and, by extension, Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, reassured party faithful and democracy-loving Nigerians that decisive steps have been taken to resolve the crisis.
He disclosed that the PDP has approached the Supreme Court of Nigeria to seek a final determination on all issues concerning the party’s leadership, particularly matters relating to internal affairs. According to him, all necessary appeals and accompanying applications have been duly filed and served on the relevant parties.
Ememobong expressed optimism that the apex court would, in the interest of democracy, give the matter expedited attention and bring clarity to the lingering dispute.
He further alleged that a recent gathering, described by its organisers as a PDP convention, was in violation of ongoing legal proceedings at the Court of Appeal. According to him, parties had already agreed on a procedural path before the court, yet certain individuals proceeded with actions capable of undermining the case. He added that the legality of the convention is now before the court and will be pursued to a logical conclusion.
The PDP spokesman also addressed a judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Abdulmalik, which granted a faction access to the party’s national secretariat and directed security agencies to provide protection. He noted that the party had earlier raised concerns about bias and had sought the judge’s recusal.
In response to the ruling, Ememobong stated that the PDP has instructed its legal team to immediately file an appeal alongside other necessary applications to challenge the decision.
He acknowledged that the party and the broader opposition are currently facing significant challenges, describing the situation as a difficult period.
However, he alleged that the crisis is being fuelled by the ruling All Progressives Congress under President Bola Tinubu, whom he accused of attempting to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party system.
According to him, such actions stem from fear of electoral backlash due to what he described as poor performance in key areas such as security, the economy, and social welfare.
Ememobong called on PDP members and Nigerians at large to remain steadfast and hopeful, expressing confidence that the Supreme Court will ultimately protect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
He concluded that the apex court now has a historic responsibility to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and reaffirm its established position on the limits of judicial interference in the internal affairs of political parties.
Signed:
Comrade Ini Ememobong, mnipr
National Publicity Secretary
