The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its plan to conduct local government elections across the state on December 29, 2026.

OYSIEC Chairman, Afees Adeniyi, disclosed this during a visit to INEC’s headquarters in Ibadan, explaining that the commission is seeking collaboration to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.

According to Adeniyi, the engagement was necessary to officially communicate the election date and request INEC’s support, particularly in the provision of key electoral materials such as an updated voter register.

He stressed that the law mandates INEC to play a supportive role to state electoral bodies, adding that OYSIEC is also seeking guidance on tackling voter apathy and other logistical challenges ahead of the polls.

Responding, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Adeniran Tella, assured the state commission of INEC’s readiness to collaborate in delivering a free, fair, and credible election.

Tella emphasised the importance of professionalism, neutrality, and adherence to the rule of law, noting that credible local government elections are crucial to strengthening grassroots democracy and boosting public confidence in democratic institutions.

Both electoral bodies expressed optimism that the renewed collaboration would enhance the credibility and success of the forthcoming local government elections in Oyo State.
