President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was disclosed on Tuesday by Dewan Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the move is aimed at ensuring that public officials seeking elective offices devote full attention to their political ambitions without undermining their current responsibilities in government.
It also reflects the administration’s effort to promote accountability and prevent conflicts of interest within the public service.
The development is expected to trigger a wave of resignations in the coming weeks, as affected appointees decide whether to pursue political office or retain their current roles.
For many, the directive represents a critical turning point that could shape both their political careers and Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
