Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are not worried about the party’s shrinking number of governors, expressing confidence that the current crisis within the party will eventually pass.
Makinde spoke on Tuesday in Abuja during an expanded meeting of the party’s PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), where he described the ongoing wave of defections from the party as a challenging period for PDP leaders, members and Nigeria’s democracy.
His remarks followed the resignation of Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, from the PDP, a development that left Makinde and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State as the party’s only remaining governors.
Despite the development, Makinde dismissed concerns over possible further defections and maintained that the party would overcome its current difficulties.
“It’s a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
He added that discussions with political stakeholders who had witnessed Nigeria’s political evolution showed that the current situation was unprecedented.
“I have been speaking with people who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them have seen a political landscape like what we are witnessing today. I can only say, we are only two remaining, but we are not bothered,” Makinde stated.
The governor expressed optimism that when the history of the current political period is written, PDP members who remained in the party would be seen as standing with the people.
“When the story of this period is told, when the story of democracy in Nigeria is told, they will find us on the side of the people. This period will also pass away,” he said.
Makinde also urged party members to remain mindful of how their actions during the period would be judged by history.
“Whatever role we want to play as individuals and collectively as a party, we must be conscious of what history is going to record against or for us for this period,” he added.
Also speaking at the meeting, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara said the party must find solutions to its internal challenges.
According to Wabara, the Board of Trustees views the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal as an opportunity for the PDP to reorganise and rebuild.
He noted that the ruling should serve as a directive for the party to “begin again” while strictly adhering to its constitution and the rule of law.
