Russian President Vladimir Putin and China have congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei the new Iran Supreme Leader.

While Putin said that Moscow would stand by Tehran in the upcoming time,
China, on the other hand, also urged the world to respect Iran’s sovereignty, calling the appointment of Mojtaba as Iran’s internal matter.

The selection attracted sharp reactions from multiple global powers, including China and Russia, who welcomed the move.

Recall that Mojtaba the second son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was appointed as Iran’s new supreme leader, according to state media reports.

The 56-year-old was announced as his father’s successor on Sunday after a vote by the Assembly of Experts, a body of clerics responsible for appointing Iran’s highest authority.

Khamenei was killed last Saturday in US and Israeli strikes on Iran. He had served as Iran’s supreme leader since 1989.

According to a report by Reuters, the 73-year-old Russian President expressed his confidence in the mid-ranking cleric and mentioned that he would continue his father’s work with honour and would unite the people of Iran in the face of several trials.

“I am confident that you will continue your father’s work with honour and unite the Iranian people in the face of severe challenges. For my part, I would like to confirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,†Putin said.

China urged the world to respect Iran’s sovereignty, calling the appointment of Mojtaba as Iran’s internal matter.

This is as China has said that it would oppose any attempt that would target the newly-appointed Supreme Leader.

China’s reaction came against the backdrop of the United States’ warning that the newly appointed supreme leader would not be able to run the country without the approval from Washington.

He’s going to have to get approval from us. If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long, Trump said in a conversation with ABC News.

Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman, Guo Jiakun, said Iran’s decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei was made in line with the country’s constitutional process.

“China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected,” he said when asked about threats against the new leader.

Israel’s military had earlier warned that any successor to Ali Khamenei could also be targeted as tensions escalate.

Meanwhile, Israel and the United States have continued airstrikes on Iran in recent days.and in response, Iran has launched waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military forces
