Olatunji Ridwan Disu was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take charge as the new Inspector General of Police.

Born in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Disu began his career in law enforcement on 18 May 1992, when he was appointed an Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Over the past three decades, Disu has built a distinguished career across multiple commands and units within the force. He most recently served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, a role he assumed in February 2026. Prior to this, he headed the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at Force Headquarters in Abuja between March 2025 and February 2026.

His previous postings include serving as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State (November 2023 – October 2024), and as Commissioner of Police in the Admin and Intelligence Department of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) from March to June 2023. Disu also held leadership roles as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and Admin Operations at Force Headquarters.

Earlier in his career, Disu commanded the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos from 2015 to 2021, and served in various capacities within state commands, including Anti-Kidnapping Units, Special Anti-Robbery Squads, and Criminal Investigation Departments across Rivers, Ondo, and Oyo States. He has also contributed to training and peacekeeping, having been a Directing Staff at the Nigerian Police Academy in Kano and Officer in Charge of Training for the Peacekeeping Department.

Disu’s educational background complements his operational expertise. He holds multiple master’s degrees, including an MSc in Entrepreneurship from the National Open University of Nigeria (2023), an MSc in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University (2022), and an MSc in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University (2010). He also earned an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence from the University of Lagos (2019), a PGD in International Relations and Strategic Studies from LASU (2000), and a B.A in English (Education) from LASU (1990).

Throughout his career, Disu has received numerous awards recognizing his operational excellence and leadership. Highlights include being named Best Commissioner of Police at the 2024 Inspector General Police Recognition Awards, leading RRS Lagos to the Most Outstanding Urban Crime Control Police Command in West and Central Africa (2019), and receiving accolades for operational excellence from Security Watch Africa and the Crime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria.

Disu is also active in professional policing bodies, including the International Academy of Forensics, the National Association of Investigative Specialists (USA), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Beyond policing, Disu is an accomplished athlete, holding a third dan black belt in Judo, serving as National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association, and winning a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships. He also led the first Nigerian Police contingent on the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to quell the Darfur crisis in 2005.

With a blend of operational experience, academic credentials, and international exposure, Olatunji Ridwan Disu brings a wealth of expertise to his role as the acting Inspector-General of Police, tasked with steering the Nigeria Police Force through ongoing reforms and security challenges.
