French police have arrested a woman in her fifties following the discovery of the bodies of two newborn babies inside a freezer at a residence in eastern France.
According to reports, officers initially found the body of one infant during a search of the home before later uncovering the remains of a second baby in the same freezer.
Authorities said suspicion quickly focused on the children’s mother, who had reportedly left the property unexpectedly prior to her arrest.
The suspect was eventually apprehended on Wednesday in a suburb of Paris and has since been taken into police custody as investigations continue.
Officials disclosed that the woman is believed to be the mother of nine children from two different relationships.
Residents of the small community, which has a population of about 1,500 people, have expressed shock and disbelief over the disturbing discovery.
Law enforcement agencies are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine any potential criminal charges.
