Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has commended traders at the Onitsha Main Market for complying with the state government’s directive to end the long-standing Monday sit-at-home practice.

In a statement shared on his official X handle on Tuesday, Soludo said he was impressed by what he described as the traders’ “clinical compliance” with the order to resume full business activities on Mondays.

The governor noted that the reopening marked a significant shift, as the market had remained largely shut on Mondays for about five years due to adherence to the sit-at-home directive associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to him, the development signalled a major turning point for economic activities in the commercial hub.

Soludo said the market was vibrant and bustling on Monday, adding that the enthusiasm and relief among traders were clearly visible.

He described the reopening as a historic moment, stressing that the sit-at-home practice had been counter-productive and harmful to the state’s economy.

The governor expressed optimism that the decision by traders to reopen reflected the collective will of the people and a renewed commitment to economic recovery in Anambra State.

He further invoked prayers for continued progress in the state, urging residents to remain united and resilient.

It will be recalled that Soludo had earlier ordered the temporary closure of the Onitsha Main Market after traders continued to observe the Monday sit-at-home.

The market was sealed for several days before being reopened, with the governor warning that economic sabotage would no longer be tolerated and urging traders to fully resume normal business
operations.
