Please, share this story:
Yoruba residents in Kano State have been urged to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding amid rising tension within the community over a proposed chieftaincy title conferment.
The call was made by Prince Muji Armstrong, Secretary of the Concerned Members of Yoruba Community Resident in Kano, in a press statement issued to journalists in Kano on Saturday.
Armstrong appealed to community members to exercise restraint despite what he described as deliberate provocations, stressing that while grievances may be genuine, confrontation should be avoided. He urged residents to allow relevant authorities to handle the matter in the interest of public peace and security.
According to him, there are growing concerns following credible reports that the Oba Yoruba of Kano, Engr. Murtala Alimi Otisese, allegedly orchestrated sponsored protests to legitimize unilateral decisions that have deepened divisions within the Yoruba community in the state.
“Such actions pose serious security risks, as they have the potential to inflame emotions, spread misinformation, and create flashpoints that could escalate into unrest,” Armstrong warned.
He explained that the core grievance centres on the proposed conferment of prominent Yoruba titles—including Asiwaju, Okanlomo, and Oluomo—in a manner perceived by many as politically subordinating the majority Yoruba population from the South-West living in Kano to a minority Kabba group from Kogi State.
Armstrong said the development has generated widespread dissatisfaction, resentment, and emotional distress across the community, noting that rather than fostering unity, the actions have intensified mistrust and polarization.
“Leadership decisions that ignore inclusiveness and consensus only breed tension and instability, especially in a multi-ethnic society where peace must be deliberately preserved,” he stated.
He further cautioned that any breakdown of law and order resulting from the alleged sponsored protests or unilateral actions should be directly attributed to Engr. Otisese. “Authority exercised without restraint or accountability poses a direct threat to communal harmony,” the statement added.
The group also called on security agencies—including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other relevant authorities—to closely monitor the situation and take proactive measures to safeguard law-abiding Yoruba residents in Kano State, in order to prevent avoidable escalation and maintain public order.
