World heavyweight boxing star, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday involved in a road traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun area of Ogun State, resulting in the death of two persons.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred on a busy stretch of the highway when a Lexus SUV conveying the boxer, with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Sources at the scene said the crash happened shortly before Danco Filling Station. Joshua was rescued from the wreckage by good Samaritans and emergency responders.
A member of the rescue team, who spoke with newsmen, confirmed that the boxer sustained only minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot.
Photographs from the scene showed the damaged Lexus SUV and the stationary truck involved in the collision, as sympathisers and security personnel gathered around the area.
Following the incident, fans and supporters flooded social media with messages of concern and prayers for the British-Nigerian boxer.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement (TRACE) Commandant, Akinbiyi Babatunde, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone were not answered as of press time.
