A former commissioner for Works and Transportation in Ekiti State, Mrs Ogun Funmilayo Theresa(OFT) has condemned the introduction of a new tax called Land Use Charge by the government of Ekiti State, describing the policy as obnoxious, inhuman, and anti-peace.

Mrs Ogun who said this through her Special Assistant on Media, Dimeji Olayinka in Ado Ekiti last Friday called for immediate reversal of the new tax regime claiming that it will worsen the economic situation of Ekiti residents.

She said, “Stoppage of this policy is the only window available to salvage the people from untold hardship.

“Under this obnoxious taxation policy, each household and property owner will pay the prescribed amount into the government’s purse annually.

“The tenement rate already in place had catered for property tax. It was wrong and insensitive for the government to impose another tax policy under the guise of increasing IGR.

“The most disturbing thing is that the amount charged is hurting, many citizens are finding it difficult to pay because of the current harsh economic situation.

“To stop inflicting suffering on the people is for Governor Oyebanji to reverse the policy without delay. The money coming to the state from the federation account is enough to fund the government projects.

“We told our people during the 2022 and 2023 elections not to vote APC government in Ekiti because the party is anti-people. Another window of opportunity is coming in 2026. I want to assure our people that if the PDP government should return to power in Ekiti, it will reverse the bad policies. It is when PDP rules in Ekiti that people’s lives move forward.
This policy is not in the best interest of the people.

“Our people ask Oyebanji to explain how the billions of Naira coming to Ekiti from the federation account are being spent. We cannot see any visible project on the ground.”
