Please, share this story:

Former Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF), Dr John Kayode Fayemi, has described former Ondo State governor, Late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as an irrepressible advocate for justice, fairness, and equity.

Akeredolu died on December 28, 2023, after a protracted illness.

Last Friday, the Ondo State Government organized a memorial lecture in Akure for the one-year remembrance of the departed Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA)

Fayemi who along with other eminent Nigerians attended the program said of Akeredolu, popularly called Aketi:

“Aketi was an irrepressible advocate for justice, fairness, and equity—a man who never shied away from speaking the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it was.

“His patriotism was boundless, as was his commitment to the public good and the quest for a united, prosperous, and secure Nigeria.

“Aketi led with conviction, governed with compassion, and inspired all who crossed his path. It is a bitter reality that death could snatch someone so full of life and purpose, leaving behind unfinished work in the service of our nation.”

*Fayemi’s full message.

I attended the one-year remembrance service in honor of my dear friend and brother, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, former Governor of Ondo State.

It is hard to believe that a year has passed since we lost Aketi, a sagely intellectual, a courageous lawyer, and a devoted nation-builder whose life and legacy remain deeply etched in our hearts.

Aketi was an irrepressible advocate for justice, fairness, and equity—a man who never shied away from speaking the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it was.

As Chairman of the South West Governors’ Forum, he demonstrated visionary leadership, most notably through establishing the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, a landmark initiative that remains a legacy of his vision and resolve.

His patriotism was boundless, as was his commitment to the public good and the quest for a united, prosperous, and secure Nigeria.

Aketi led with conviction, governed with compassion, and inspired all who crossed his path. It is a bitter reality that death could snatch someone so full of life and purpose, leaving behind unfinished work in the service of our nation.

As we remember him, we draw strength from the memories of his courage, his wisdom, and his relentless fight for justice. Aketi’s life reminds us of the duty we owe to our communities and our nation to continue the work of building a better Nigeria, as he would have wanted.

Nigeria has lost a towering figure, Ondo State has lost a beloved son, and I have lost a dear friend. But his legacy endures in the hearts of all who knew and admired him.

Rest well, Aketi. You remain irreplaceable.
